Race According to Avatar: The Last Airbender

Check out my first “According to Fiction” blog. I decided to really just throw myself into this first one to talk about race and how to understand it through the show “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

According to Fiction

Nickelodeon’s hit animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender has a lot of ingrained social commentary to be explored. The show is literally built on the plot point of war and political unrest. Through the four elements (water, earth, fire, and air) we are able to observe how different cultures live and interact with one another, and this can help us to apply this technique to our own lives. How do we act as a culture and how do other cultures act in the modern world we live in today?

In America, one of the biggest topics of discussion today is race relations. Racial tension is not something America is unfamiliar with. As a country built on the backs of slaves, it is a staple of our history and to understanding how America made it to where it is today.
